OZ Wheels History

Silvano Oselladore and Pietro Zen created their first wheel in 1971. The name OZ is derived from the founders Oselladore and Zen. Today OZ produces standard equipment wheels for some of the most exclusive automobiles in the world including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Aston Martin and Lotus. OZ also supplies wheels to prestigious automotive companies like Bertone, Pininfarina, AMG, Hartge and AC Schnitzer.

1971
In a petrol station in Italy, Silvano Oselladore and Pietro Zen, hand-crafted the first light alloy wheel.

1978
OZ S.p.A. was constituted, with a company capital of 210 million lire, thanks to the official entry of Isnardo Carta. The new manufacturing facility was inaugurated in S. Martino di Lupari, in the province of Padua, on a site of 1,800 sq.m.

1982

OZ became the sole wheel supplier to Lamborghini.

1984
OZ Racing Division was set up and started producing wheels for Formula 1. The first single-seater to be equipped with OZ Racing wheels was Alfa Romeo's F1 car. The wheels were a two-piece construction from magnesium and aluminium.

1987
OZ set up the "Racing Wheels" award, with the aim of identifying talent emerging in the car racing world. Gordon Murray (1988), Carlos Sainz (1990), Michael Schumacher (1991), Jacques Villeneuve (1994) and Frank Williams (1996) were awarded the prize.

1989
The associate partner OZ Japan was set up.

1990

Carlos Sainz won the Driver's World Rally in a Toyota Celica 4WD, equipped with OZ wheels.

1991
OZ patented the technology for the unified centre bore for multiple applications.

1992
OZ moved into the modern factory in S. Martino di Lupari. Today the Company occupies a total surface area of 100,000 sq.m, of which 75,000 are covered.

1993
The associate partner OZ Deutschland was set up. In the same year Alain Prost's Williams won the F1 car and driver titles. The cars were fitted with OZ wheels.

1994
OZ wheels set up its own Style Center.

1996
The third associate partner, OZ France was set up.

1997
The Carting Championship, Indianapolis 500 Miles and Indy Racing League were added to the OZ collection of medals.

1998
OZ wheels obtains ISO 9001 Certification, this made OZ the first Italian company to obtain this type of certification on its entire production cycle.

1999
Collaboration with Aprilia was initiated and a project for forged aluminium motorbike wheels was developed. The associate partners OZ USA and OZ Scandinavia were set up.

2001

A new victory with the Peugeot Total Team (Constructor's Championship) and with the Subaru World Rally Team (Driver's Championship) with Richard Burns. OZ was also victorious in the F3000 Championship, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours.

2002
Marcus Grönholm wins the Driver's World Rally Championship in a Peugeot 206. The same team wins the Constructor's Championship. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions in the American Le Mans, with Kristensen, Capello, Biela and Pirro in a Audi R8, equipped with OZ wheels.

2003
OZ S.p.A. And OZ Racing came under the same roof in a single manufacturing facility, situated in Via Monte Bianco, S. Martino di Lupari. The year 2003 was extremely successful in terms of sports victories: the teams officially supplied by OZ won the Indianapolis 500 Miles (1st and 2nd place with Bentley, 3rd place with Audi), the European Touring Car Championship, the German Touring Car Championships (1st and 2nd place Drivers and 1st place Constructors), and lastly the World Rally Championships, with Solberg in a Subaru for the Drivers and Citroën for the Constructors.

2004
History repeats itself: the Venetian House represents in a more aggressive and charming version the Superturismo, an icon for OZ. This wheel won at numourous race tracks and more than a million units were sold of the road model. The white version is now named Superturismo WRC, which equipped the winners of the Rally Drivers and Manufacturers’ Championship. In 2204 OZ also wins the Indy 500, with Buddy Rice. Double victory at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans for the R8 from Audi Sport Japan Team Goh. It may be a repetition, but the wheels were once again: forged magnesium multispokes with a Superturismo design.

2005

- First at Le Mans with the splendid Audi R8.
- F1 driver’s and constructor’s world champion with Renault F1 and Alonso.
- World rally driver’s and constructor’s champion (WRC) with Citroën.

2006
- Alonso and Renault win the F1 constructor and driver world championship title
- Loeb wins the Rally drivers championship
- The BP Ford World Rally team gains the Rally constructors championship
- Audi R10 leads in the Le Mans race
- Exciting success in the US most important motor race: Indianapolis’ 500;
- The list includes also Maserati MC12 in the FIA GT1 championship and Mitsubishi in the Dakar Rally Raid
2006 also saw the return of the Superleggera design, renamed as Ultraleggera, thanks to a further reduction in weight.

2007
After the Antares, Superleggera and Michelangelo II, OZ gains another design award. At the Essen Motorshow 2007 AutoBild magazine declared the Botticelli III wheel “best wheel of the year”. In the meanwhile, OZ is launching the new high-tech products line, called HLT: High Light Technology.
There are again several successes in the racing world: Audi wins with OZ at Le Mans and in the DTM constructors and drivers championship.
Again, an extraordinary double win in the WCR constructors and drivers championship, with BP Ford and Loeb.
Wins in 2006 also include the FIA GT1 and the Dakar Rally Raid with Mitsubishi.
These latest championship awards bring OZ’s successes since 1984 to more than 100, in all the world’s main racing competitions.

18 inch OZ wheels for BMW 3 Series

OZ submits their wheels to multiple tests to measure road stress. To detect minute flaws, wheels are put under pressure in a special water tank and scanned for flaws by X-ray. Further examination is done by computer and electron microscopes. Finally, an anti-corrosion treatment is given, followed by a protective lacquer coating and final cleaning. It is no surprise OZ works according to the stringent rules of T.U.V., the German control office.

1990
ASA decides to build a state-of-the-art alloy wheel manufacturing facility. ASA went to BBS in Germany to tap the best technical knowledge in facility design, manufacturing and quality control for producing high quality alloy wheels. Their agreement with BBS, a world leader in wheel technology with over two decades of success in racing and high-end aftermarket wheels, is still in effect today. This cooperative agreement gives ASA valuable access to technical and product information.

1992
Production starts at the new Jeywon facility in South Korea.

1994
By basing its quality standards around those used by BBS, ASA became one of the first alloy wheel companies to obtain ISO9001 cerfication.

1999
ASA obtained QS9000 certification, one of the highest quality standards in the automotive industry.

For the firm owner of Breyton Design GmbH, Edmund Breyton, autotechnic and autodesign are his dearest hobbies during his IT study. Two years after he had finished his IT study he founds the engineering office EBS in Stockach. Initially, the field of activity of this young company is development orders and design studies for several tuning companies and automobile manufacturers, especially AMG and BMW.

1985
Due to the enormous increase of the branch Edmund Breyton had the possibility to establish a sales program on the market and in 1985 he released the first Breyton design line for aerodynamic parts.

1987
In the beginning of 1987, the development and production of alloy wheels began. In a response to strong demand for engine tuning the development of tuning kits followed soon after.

1986
Due to this fast development at the same time more space was required. The renamed company, Breyton Design GmbH, moved to a new 6000 sqm in Stockach.

1992
Aerodynamic parts, alloy wheels and engine tuning were offered for all current BMW models.

2000
57 % of a swiss engine foundery was taken over, today it is called Breyton Swiss. The result of this cooperation was a leading role in the development of engine tuning and supercharger technology. At this time Breyton realised the fastest 3 BMW of the world with 528 horspeower.

The enormous increase of demand for quality, high-class and exclusive alloy wheels resulted in an intense orientation on the development of BMW wheels.

Yokohama has been designing wheels since 1974. Advan is derived from advanced and is Yokohama's flagship brand. The fact Advan RS wheels were used in WTCC racing proves it is both light and strong, RS stands for “racing sports”. Adoption of the flow forming process adds stiffness and rigidity while making the one-piece wheel as light as possible. The 10-spokes are concave, dipping toward the center of the wheel. The Advan RS is finished with two cutting processes after coating.

BBS LM-R on 3 Series

BBS only offer the Diamond Black finished LM-R in a 19 inch diameter. The darker face color and 3-piece design makes this wheel look smaller then it really is. On the technology front the LM-R is really big. BBS designed grooves in the side of the spokes to make the LM-R stronger and lighter.

Of all available BBS wheels the CH model is best suited for the 3 Series design. It is no coincidence that a wheel derived from the CH is available as an OEM BMW accessory. No other wheel maker can rely on the same level of motorsport experience and know-how. BBS has won numerous prestigous races, championships and awards. Over the years BBS wheels brought home IndyCar, Nascar, Formula 1 and DTM titles. For over a decade BBS is a trusted OEM partner of car manufactures like Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and many others.

1970
Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand founded a small production plant in Schiltach manufacturing plastic chassis parts. The initials of the two founders and the location of the plant resulted in the company name BBS.

1972
The company started to manufacture a new type of three-piece racing wheels. After just a few years, the new technology led to great success in motorsports.

1983
BBS took its success of its three-piece racing wheels and perfected it for series production for use on normal roads. The BBS RS wheel was born. This wheel flew off the shelves to become a complete hit. In the same year, BBS also founded the subsidiaries BBS of America and BBS Japan Ltd.

1987
The previous GmbH & Co. KG started trading as BBS Kraftfahrzeugtechnik AG and went public. The shares were listed in Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

1990
In its 20th year, BBS surpassed 100 million dollars in turnover and was now one of the most important suppliers of manufactures such as Audi, BMW and VW as well as of numerous successful racing teams worldwide. ASA decides to build a state-of-the-art alloy wheel manufacturing facility. ASA came to BBS in Germany to tap their technical knowledge in facility design, manufacturing and quality control for producing high quality alloy wheels. 1994
This year was the most successful motorsport year in the company's history up to date: Formula One, the IndyCar Series, the DTM and ADAC world championships were all won on BBS wheels.

1995
The company celebrated its 25-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, BBS set new standards for light alloy wheels with its new RSII wheel. The wheel combined proved quality and trend-setting innovation.
Michael Schumacher won the second Formula One championship on BBS wheels with Benetton Renault.

1997
BBS again became the largest supplier of the IndyCar Series as well as to Formula One for the first time with five teams and ten vehicles all racing on BBS wheels.

1999
BBS acquired further important customers in the automobile industry including DaimlerChrysler, Porsche, Ferrari and Jaguar. And an additional manufacturing plant was founded in Herbolzheim near Freiburg.

2000
A new 7,000 sqm storage and logistics centre was opened in March at the manufacturing plant in Herbolzheim Germany.
BBS won the Formula One championship with Ferrari and Michael Schumacher and became GP 500 world champion with Suzuki and Kenny Roberts.
BBS achieved a significant growth in turnover and profit and celebrated record growth.

2001
BBS supplied six Formula One teams with a total of twelve vehicles. During the month of August, a 8,000 sqm new paint finish centre was opened at Herbolzheim.
BBS won the Formula One championship for the second time with Ferrari and Michael Schumacher as well as becoming GP 125 world champion with Gilera and Manuel Poggiali.

2002
The new paint finish centre in Herbolzheim was named as the most environmentally friendly in Germany by the Federal Environment Minister.
BBS won the Podio Award for its development of innovative solutions for Ferrari, the Ferrari Formula One team and Maserati GT vehicles and was also recognised as a supplier of outstanding quality.

2004
This year saw the introduction of another new breakthrough technology: Air Inside Technology. The hollow chamber technology not only results in weight reductions but also in improved stability. Michael Schumacher became Formula One champion for the seventh time on BBS wheels.

2005
BBS completed its third expansion phase at its plant in Herbolzheim. For the first time in the company's history, vehicles fitted with BBS wheels took part in the Dakar Rally. The X-Raid Team under the leadership of Quandt underwent the hardest of tests in a BMW X3 fitted with BBS wheels.

2006
During this year, racing teams worldwide won 26 titles on BBS wheels.
BBS won a total of six national and international awards: Best Brand by "auto motor und sport", Best Quality by "sport auto", the Automechanika Innovation Award, the SEMA Motorshow Innovation Award, Best wheel of the year by "Auto-Bild Sportscars" and Best Brand by "Motorsport aktuell".

2007
Schiltach, 6th August: a new chapter in BBS history was written. The Belgium company Punch International NV took over BBS International GmbH. The group, headquartered in Sint Martens Latem, is a diversified industrial holding company that employs more than 3,000 people worldwide.
BBS continues to develop and manufacture light alloy wheels for motorsport and general use at its two plants in Germany ensuring that the wheels from the Black Forest remain synonymous with high quality and innovation "made in Germany".

2008
BBS won the "Best Brand" award from the readers of "auto motor und sport" for the third time in a row.
